# Workflows and commentary (MCP)

> Drive layZ Generic Commentary and other templates from MCP: start runs, step tools, script brief modes, approval, voiceover, editor, and export.

Guided workflows are the highest-quality path for full productions. Agents should treat `layz_get_current_step` as the source of truth after every action.

## Core run tools

| `layz_start_workflow` | Create a run (`templateId`, optional `referenceUrl`) |
| `layz_get_current_step` | Full guidance for the active module |
| `layz_get_status` | Lightweight status |
| `layz_advance_step` / `layz_skip_step` / `layz_go_to_step` | Navigation |
| `layz_set_step_data` | Save notes, picks, reviews (not scriptApproval) |
| `layz_get_workflow_link` | Dashboard URL for humans |
| `layz_complete_run` | Mark finished |
| `layz_list_runs` | Resume later |

## Agent rules of thumb

* Do **not** use `layz_analyze_videos` for Generic Commentary
* Save timestamped **visualNotes** on the downloader step after inspecting frames
* Prefer advancing only when the current module’s exit criteria are met
* After export, wait with `layz_wait_for_processing` (`kind: export`)
* Return publication title with the final links
