# Captions

> Generate, edit, translate, and export captions in the layZ AI Video Editor. Auto, manual, and upload caption workflows for Shorts.

The **Captions** panel turns speech into on-screen phrases viewers can read without sound.

## Sources

| Tab | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Auto** | Transcribe from speech audio and place designed captions |
| **Manual** | Build caption rows yourself |
| **Upload** | Import SRT, VTT, JSON, or TXT |

## Auto captions

1. Choose a **caption design**
2. Open **Caption settings**
3. Set **Speech audio:** Automatic · Narration · Original clip audio
4. Pick **Clips to transcribe**, language, and optional approved script
5. **Generate Captions**
6. Review the **Transcript** list, edit text and timing, then **Add to timeline**

## Translate

Translate to a target language, then **Replace** or **Add a second-language track**. **Restore originals** when needed.

## Keep clear of subject

Enable **Keep clear of subject** to push captions away from faces or the main subject when placement tools are available.

## Export transcript

Download **SRT**, **VTT**, **JSON**, or **TXT** for reuse outside layZ. MCP can export with `layz_export_subtitles`.

## Captions vs Text panel

Captions follow speech timing. Use the [Text panel](https://docs.layz.ai/video-editor/text-and-titles.md) for hooks and titles that are not tied to the transcript.

## FAQ

> [accordion] Which audio should I caption?
>
> Prefer **Narration** when you generated voiceover. Use original clip audio for talking-head source.

> [accordion] Can MCP style all captions at once?
>
> Yes. Agents use caption style tools and `layz_editor_style_all_captions` / related commands.
